The clearance sequence
- 1. Establish the importer. The Nigerian buyer registers its business and tax identity and works through an Authorised Dealer Bank.
- 2. Obtain the Product Certificate. For SONCAP-regulated products, the certificate must cover the relevant models before Form M is processed.
- 3. Open Form M. The importer submits the proforma invoice, insurance and required product evidence through the official trade process.
- 4. Complete pre-shipment conformity. The exporter works with an approved independent accredited firm for inspection, testing and the shipment SONCAP Certificate.
- 5. Generate PAAR and clear. Final invoice, packing list, transport document and conformity certificates support PAAR and Customs clearance.
Shipment document map
| Stage | Key control |
|---|---|

Product and label checks
Nigeria uses 230V/50Hz and Type G as the official plug standard. Specify 220–240V/50Hz and the required plug on the lot sheet, then inspect the rating plate and plug before loading.
Product information should use metric units and identify the product, origin, specifications, manufacture information, batch or lot and applicable standard. The importer should confirm the current format and any category-specific requirements.
Used and open-box stock
Do not assume that every used appliance is admissible. Nigeria’s prohibition list explicitly covers certain used cooling equipment, while broader used electrical and electronic goods must satisfy environmental rules distinguishing functional equipment from e-waste. Open-box, display, returns and refurbished lots require written pre-clearance from the importer and broker before purchase.
Practical loading control
Keep one model schedule linking carton marks, serial or batch references, certification documents and packing-list rows. For mixed loads, verify every appliance line separately; a certificate for one model does not automatically cover another model in the same container.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Product Certificate and a SONCAP Certificate?+
The Product Certificate supports registration and Form M for the covered product or model, while the shipment SONCAP Certificate is issued for the specific consignment after the required conformity process.
Can goods ship before Form M and SONCAP are arranged?+
That creates a serious clearance risk. The importer should complete the official sequence and confirm the shipment certificate path before loading.
Are surplus appliances exempt from SONCAP?+
No. New overstock and canceled orders remain subject to the destination’s regulated-product requirements.
Can used small appliances be imported?+
Eligibility depends on the category and current prohibition and environmental rules. Used cooling equipment has explicit restrictions, and other used electrical goods need functionality and e-waste screening.
Which plug and rating should be selected?+
Nigeria’s official supply is 230V/50Hz with Type G plugs. Confirm the actual buyer specification and inspect the physical plug and rating plate before shipment.
